The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.
The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the rules are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
