Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

The pace bowler has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

Australia's chair of selectors the selector has stated that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches kicking off on November 21 in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of taking part.

"We know that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations involved, not only his injury, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a significant role. Hopefully from the opening match. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss several home seasons in a short span.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the series.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and stated that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs in any case. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
