The Himalayan nation's Electoral Scene Sees Major Partnership Forged Between TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable development ahead of the upcoming general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the aftermath of widespread and fatal young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the issues raised by the new generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.

The late summer revolt was triggered by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding accusations of systemic political corruption.

Details of the New Political Agreement

According to the official pact, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political class. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Broader Political Consultations Underway

In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with a number of leading political leaders. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a credible election is a collective duty. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
